Today, some students have taken to the streets to protest against the government's decision to re-introduce quota system of selection into the University of Malawi. The decision to stage demonstrations comes in the wake of acrimonious memos by the 'concerned students' against Mr Kuleza Phokoso, the Students Union president, for his perceived reluctance to arrange a referendum in respect of whether Chanco should agree to the government's decision or not.Last month, the University of Malawi was asked to cast a vote on whether the proposed system should be implemented but a heated debate arose at Chancellor College as to whether the students should take a stand at all. Those in favor of taking a stand emerged triumphant but no referendum subsequently took place...
Mr Phokoso has nonetheless denied being indifferent to the demands of the students contending that he is acting within the dictates of SUCC constitution. Whether Mr Phokoso is contravening any provisions in the Constitution is an open question. The question that we should now ask ourselves is:would the government listen to us if we had voted against quota?
